What
is Body-Mind Psychotherapy?
Body-Mind
Psychotherapy (BMP) is a somatic approach to psychotherapy developed by Susan Aposhyan which
is uniquely focused on physiology, neuroscience, and early motor development. Exactly
what is happening in this body, in this moment, in response to this
event or emotion? . . . What developmental step is inherent in the
movement of these internal states and responses? These are the questions
that begin the body-mind psychotherapeutic process. Embodiment is central to Body-Mind Psychotherapy and is used to antidote dissociative states resulting from post-traumatic stress as well as other psychological issues and decisions.
Consultations
For assistance applying BMP principles in your clinical practice, teaching, or personal development, consultations are available by phone. Simply call 303-440-8889 to schedule.
Most people are surprised by how effective phone consultation can be in working with the body-mind and core personal issues.
Workshops
Introductory workshops are offered to introduce helping professionals to BMP work. See current offerings tab above. The Training
Body-Mind
Psychotherapy (BMP) training is open to all helping professionals, not just mental health clinicians, who
are interested in the interface between body, mind, and emotions. This includes massage therapists, educators of every sort, medical personnel, and organizational consultants. Professionals in all these areas have reported great benefits from BMP training.
The
fundamental focus of BMP training is cultivating a deep level of
embodiment. It is through our own embodiment that we become present
and responsive with more and more of ourselves. This is a constantly
deepening process.
The
second level of skills in BMP revolves around observation. Through
the ability to deeply witness your clients, you can empathize more
profoundly and more effectively.
The
final level of skill in BMP involves the ability to facilitate clients'
personal development based in a deep understanding of their psychophysical
process.
You
will learn to empathize and deeply witness others using the body
systems. Since communication is 70% non-verbal, your BMP skills
will greatly assist you in client intervention and facilitation.
BMP provides you with a deep level of understanding of the psychophysical
and developmental process.
A wide
range of BMP trainees including psychotherapists, teachers, organizational
consultants, nurses, M.D.'s, bodyworkers, physical trainers, yoga
teachers, and many more, have found training in this work to be
a deeply satisfying experience both physically and emotionally.
The training simultaneously provides basic skills of somatic psychology
body awareness, movement, breath, and contact embedded
within a highly sophisticated context of embodiment. This creates
a ground for advanced and beginning practitioners alike to deepend
and refine their clinical work.
This
workshop combines didactic sharing of detailed information from
anatomy, physiology, neuroscience, psychology, and spiritual disciplines,
with experiential work in embodiment, communication, movement, breath,
meditation, leadership, and facilitation.
What
Tools Will I Gain Through Training?
Learn
the skills necessary to support your clients and students in their
own embodiment process. Deepen your own relationship between body,
mind, and emotions.
The
training begins with the practice of embodiment, developmental movement,
and the body systems, and includes application of these studies
to family systems, objects relations, birth, death, spirituality,
sexuality, and trauma. Specific skills include:
- Deeper,
more articulate experience of your own bodily state and presence
- Cognitive
and experiential knowledge of motor development
- Ability
to assess the moment to moment state of clients' body systems
- Understanding
of the relationship between the body systems and emotional patterns
- Ability
to assess clients' motor development
- Understanding

- Facilitation
tools of body systems and developmental actions to support personal
development.
- Ability
to assess and facilitate cellular-emotional processes.
The Curriculum
The curriculum for Body-Mind Psychotherapy training is organized around the following topics.
Embodiment is the foundation of the entire training. The trainee develops their own embodiment practice and this is the foundation of all their somatic observations of others and somatic interventions with others.
Energetic Development refers to the interface between psychological and physical development utilizing the framework of early motor development. Energetic development offers an immediately applicable tool that links your observations about clients' somatic patterns with their life issues and then points to developmental options. Taking a developmental perspective allows the psychotherapeutic process to shift away from a pathological or limiting view.
The Psychology of the Body Systems begins with a detailed experiential study of the anatomy and physiology of each of the major body systems, i.e. muscles, nervous system, viscera, et cetera. This study leads to an understanding of the interrelationship between different parts of the body and different psychological strengths and dilemmas, offering a powerful tool for growth and transformation.
The Interaction Cycle is a simple and easy to learn tool that can be utilized with clients to bring change and somatic awareness to any psychological issue, providing the client with access to their own internal wisdom and direction.
The interrelationship between the Heart, Brain, and Cells provides a template for optimal functioning, as well as introducing the transformative possibilities of cellular consciousness and tools for accessing the compassionate potential of the heart.
Birth, Death, Trauma, and Sexuality clarifies how to utilize BMP tools in working with each of these potent areas of life.
Throughout the training, each trainee receives feedback and support in developing and integrating both personal and Professional Skills that are emerging from the training.
